A story out of KRQE, Albuquerque puts the special education numbers in New Mexico at 20 percent.
That is above the official national average of 15 percent.
Actually New Mexico can join a lot of other places in the U.S where the average is above 15 percent.
Hampshire Co, W.V. is also 20 percent.
So is Marquette, MI, Ashland, NE, Lafayette, IN, Mars Hills, ME, Norwin, PA, the public schools in Delaware, Dayton, OH, Oakland, CA, Wahkiakum, WA, Rochester, NY, New Haven, CT, Muncie, IN, the public schools in New Jersey, Fort Wayne, IN, New York City, Bemidji, MN, the public schools in MA, and Walhalla, SC.
Those are just the places that have publicly stated a special education rate of 20 percent.
I keep records on rates given in news reports. Now I have higher rates from all over the U.S. All the way up to 27 percent. It’s just incredible to me that ever-increasing rates of special needs students are of no real concern.
